A binary question is bound to two zodiac signs — the Urim stone (one alternative) and the Thummim stone (the other), as Saul: "Give Urim [if the fault is mine/Jonathan's], give Thummim [if the people's]" (1 Sam 14:41 LXX). A planet in a sign lights that sign's stone. Exactly one lit → decisive; neither → silence("the LORD did not answer," 1 Sam 28:6); both → ambiguous (re-ask, or read the spelled output below). The 1-sign clean reading tracks a specific body — pick one and the verdict is YES iff that body sits in the Urim sign that day. Sweep the Urim sign through all twelve and exactly one is YES: a clean, checkable 1-YES-11-NO calibration.
The Urim ve-Thummim were the oracle kept in the high priest's breastpiece (חושן, the choshen) — twelve stones for the twelve tribes, two shoulder-stones for the twelve sons (Exodus 28). Below: what we know without doubt about the apparatus, the 12 gems, the 22-letter alphabet, the spelled answers, the Bible's consultations — and the honest limits of what can and cannot be verified.

Check-table — what we know without doubt about the apparatus

Only textual facts (Exodus, Samuel, Ezra), a primary Second-Temple source (Josephus), checkable letter-arithmetic, and astronomy. The reverse-engineered reading gate and the question-to-sign binding are models — they are explained honestly in ⑦, not listed here.

② The apparatus — twelve gems, two shoulder stones (Exodus 28)

Exodus 28 prescribes twelve stones on the חושן (choshen), four rows of three, each engraved with a tribe's name, and two שהם (shoham) shoulder-stones carrying the twelve sons (six on each shoulder). Josephus (Antiquities3.7.7, 1st-century primary source) reads the apparatus astronomically: "the twelve stones… whether we understand by them the months, or the like number of the signs of that circle which the Greeks call the Zodiack, we shall not be mistaken", and "each of the sardonyxes declares to us the sun and the moon" — the shoulder stones are the two great lights of Genesis 1:16 (ruling day and night), the twelve chest stones the twelve signs. He adds that the oracle answered by splendor shining forth from the stones — fitting, for Urim(אורים) means "lights."

Each gem is labeled with its tribe and the set of zodiac signs that tribe's name lights(gate-derived, not invented): a tribe spans several signs — e.g. יהודהlights Aries · Taurus · Virgo. So one gem ≠ one sign under the reading rule; the naive "gem n = sign n" (Judah→Gemini) is contradicted by the gate. Josephus's "twelve = twelve signs" is a count correspondence, not a stone-by-stone map — which the text never gives and the undated consultations cannot calibrate. Gems that READ today are outlined green.

③ The 22-letter breastpiece alphabet = Sefer Yetzirah 3 + 7 + 12

The twelve tribal names inscribe 18 of the 22 letters — all 3 mothers and all 7 doubles, but only 8 of the 12 simples. The four missing letters (ח ט צ ק) are all simples (the zodiac axis). The patriarchs complete precisely that axis: Isaac (יצחק) supplies ח צ ק; "shivtei yeshurun" supplies ט; Joseph (יוסף, already among the twelve sons) supplies ס. The breastpiece alphabet is the Sefer Yetzirah alphabet, and the patriarchs close the zodiac.

The four missing signs — and the orphan of the double exile:
ח = Cancer · Tammuz S4
17 Tammuz — the breach of Jerusalem; opens the Three Weeks of mourning (Bein ha-Metzarim, Lam 1:3).
supplied by: Isaac
ט = Leo · Av · orphanS5
9 Av / Tisha B'Av — destruction of BOTH Temples; the national day of calamity. No patriarch bears this letter — only the collective Israel.
supplied by: shivtei yeshurun — no person
צ = Aquarius · Shevat S11
deep winter; the new year of trees (Tu BiShvat).
supplied by: Isaac
ק = Pisces · Adar S12
late winter — Purim; "when Adar enters, joy increases" (Ta'anit 29a). Not a negative month.
supplied by: Isaac + Jacob
Sefer Yetzirah 5:7-8 binds the 12 simples to the 12 Hebrew months (Nisan=ה … Adar=ק). The four the sons lack fall in Tammuz–Av (summer) + Shevat–Adar (deep winter). The two summer ones are precisely the traditional period of calamity — the Three Weeks (Lamentations 1:3), from 17 Tammuz (the breach of Jerusalem) to 9 Av (Tisha B'Av, the day both Temples fell). And ט = Av, the climax of that destruction, is the one letter no patriarch carries — it is closed only by "shivtei yeshurun," the collective Israel bearing the letter of the double exile. (The winter pair is not negative: Adar is the joy of Purim, "when Adar enters, joy increases," Ta'anit 29a.)

④ The spelled answer — "letters that protrude and join"

The rabbinic reading is deeper than binary: the letters that light join to spell a message (Yoma 73b). On any day the gate reads the |S|=1 chief-deity names whose simple is occupied and whose mother is geometrically available — those namesare the spelled output, the deity that "presides" over the day.

חברון Hebron~4.0%

⑤ Documented biblical consultations

The Bible records the question and the verdict, but never the day or the sky. The one text that names both lots is 1 Sam 14:41 (LXX); the other consultations say only "David/Saul inquired of the LORD" (via the ephod = the Urim/Thummim instrument).

⑥ Reverse-engineering — can it be dated or verified from the Bible?

It cannot be dated.
No consultation carries a day-date — only approximate regnal years (±5–20 yr). The reverse-lookup test (scripts/calc_urim_reverse_lookup.mjs) takes the best-documented verdict, 1 Sam 14, fixes a binding, and counts days in Saul's ~30-year window that reproduce BOTH lots: ~230–300 days (~10%) for every binding tried. One verdict cannot pin a day; a "match" is not verification (look-elsewhere: 4 signs of 12 × every 5th day × 30 years).
It cannot be verified astronomically.
The documented answers are decisions ("Judah first," "Pursue, you will overtake"), not sky-conditions. The oracle reads the sky; to check it against the record you would need the binding (which sign = Judah) AND the day — both absent. The oracle is correct by construction only where the binding encodes a sky-condition (e.g. "is the sun in Aries?").
It is NOT purely binary.
(a) Yoma 73b: the answer is a spelled message — letters protrude (R. Yochanan) or self-join (Resh Lakish), e.g. "Pursue, for you shall overtake." (b) 2 Sam 5:23 returns a multi-word tactical instruction ("don't go straight up; circle behind the balsam trees…"). (c) Judges 20 gives the same binary answer three times — two defeats, then victory — proving it selects, not predicts the outcome (Prov 16:33, cleromancy).
What is a model, not a fact.
The reading gate (a letter lights when its sign is occupied; a name reads when its letters light and its mother is available) is the Sefer Yetzirah construction applied as an operational model — the Urim passages record the verdict, not the mechanism. The question-to-sign binding is supplied by the asker (Saul: "Urim = me, Thummim = the people"), not by the sky: the same day inverts its answer if you swap which sign means YES. So the verdict = the fixed sky × the asker's arbitrary convention.
The 22-letter completion is exact, checkable arithmetic. The binary oracle is an operational model of the breastpiece on the real sky: its astronomy is computed (astronomy-engine), its reading gate is the Sefer Yetzirah construction applied as a model (the Urim passages record the verdict, not the mechanism). The clean 1-sign reading is a body-specific truth-tracker — for a chosen body exactly one of the twelve signs is YES (its true sign), eleven are NO; the script demo confirms 7/7 + a 1-YES-11-NO sweep. Scripts: calc_urim_thummim.mjs (alphabet + binary rates), calc_urim_oracle_demo.mjs (the body-specific yes/no + calibration sweep), calc_urim_reverse_lookup.mjs (the dating underdetermination).
