Commentaries on Sefer Yetzirah (incl. Saadia Gaon)
Saadia Gaon et al. · 1806 ed. · Hebrew
About this book
Saadia Gaon (882-942), the foremost Gaon of the early medieval period, wrote the earliest surviving Jewish commentary on Sefer Yetzirah, defending and expounding its 3-mothers / 7-doubles / 12-simples letter-cosmology and its letter-planet-zodiac correspondence. The Grodno 1806 edition collects five commentaries on Sefer Yetzirah including Saadia’s (PDF scan, 170 pp.) and is hosted here.
Relevance to this project
The historic-sourcing anchor of the paper: the earliest attested Jewish exegesis that records the Sefer Yetzirah letter-luminary mapping as a fixed tradition - the documentary proof that the letter-astronomy is old and recorded, not a modern retrojection (Sec.6, historic-sourcing).
