Monas Hieroglyphica + A True and Faithful Relation

John Dee (Meric Casaubon, ed.) · 1564 / 1659 · Latin / English

About this book

John Dee (1527-1608), the Elizabethan mathematician and magus, sought the celestial language of the angels. The Monas Hieroglyphica (1564) is his own Latin treatise on a single glyph synthesising the seven planets; A True and Faithful Relation (ed. Casaubon, 1659) records his Enochian angel-conversations. Both are hosted here (the Monas as Latin text + scan; the Relation as text).

Relevance to this project

The late-Renaissance astral-linguistic project - the Enochian "celestial language" is the most explicit historical attempt to recover a sky-born alphabet, the direct cousin of the stellar-alphabet thesis; the Monas condenses the 7 planets into one letter-glyph (mages: John Dee).
